Up and Running with Wordpress

Welcome to the all new Distracto, now running Wordpress! My old Movable Type installation had been broken for a while, and I’ve been really growing to like Wordpress recently. I’d also been meaning to switch Distracto’s web host for a while, so I took the opportunity to get it all done at once. Phew!

I managed to get all of the old entries imported into Wordpress, and made sure all the old permalinks still work, so there shouldn’t be any noticeable differences, other than the slightly modified design.

Having a working blog platform again will mean some (slightly) more regular updates. In fact, there might be some exciting news in the next week or two. Stay tuned. ;)

Frank - I am wondering if you have had a chance to the Movable Type 4.0 Beta. The product has come a long, long way. We have worked really hard at making Movable Type 4.0 a gigantic leap forward for the product and I would hope it shows.

But if you still feel MT is not right for you, I would honestly love to know why. I am committed to making MT the best blogging product around.

Thank you so much Frank, and no matter what platform you use, thanks for blogging!

Byrne, it’s pretty cool that you took the time to find this and respond. I have nothing against the Movable Type platform - I’ve just grown to know and like Wordpress more over the past year or so.

I first tried Wordpress because I was running some borderline “commercial” sites and didn’t want to run afoul of MT’s licensing terms. I also prefer to use open source software whenever possible, for practical reasons. I see that MT does have a GPL version coming up soon, which is cool, but Wordpress already is GPL.

I’ll certainly give Movable Type another look when the open source version is released, but there would have to be a pretty compelling reason to motivate me to switch yet again.
